About Dovercourt

Dovercourt is far older than Harwich as confirmed by the findings of many historic relics, and the fact that the region was inhabited by Romans, and later Saxons. It also suffered the indignity of Viking raids. Later, in 1087 came mention of the area in the Doomsday Book when it was owned by Aubrey de Vere, this being long before there was any mention of Harwich for which the earliest reference is the 13th century.

These days Dovercourt is part of Harwich, it operates as a coastal resort town with a pleasant sandy beach backed by a sea wall. The beach has been awarded the E.U. Blue Flag indicating its cleanliness and safety for families with children. Other pleasures include watching the constant flow of shipping traffic as large and small craft slip in and out of Harwich harbour. On the opposite side of the mouth of the Stour lies historic Landguard Fort.

River trips and sea fishing trips are a feature of the area, but for visitors who prefer the comfort of "terra-firma" there is a picturesque boating lake, and pleasure gardens.

Shopping is available at Harwich, or for a wider selection of shops visit the larger towns of Colchester and Ipswich. Visitors will find a good selection of hotels, inns, restaurants and cafe's. This is a wonderful region for exploring the beauty of the Essex coast or the hinterland of magnificent countryside made famous in the paintings of John Constable.
