About Bexhill
The old town of Bexhill-on-Sea is of immense charm, it has wide streets, gracious building including black and white timber frame properties, but its real "star" is the fabled De La Warr Pavilion built in 1935. This eye catching building with its long flowing lines and glass encased staircase dominates a large proportion of the seafront
The town owes its prosperity to the man from whom the building takes its name. Lord De La Warr, who in the 1880's began building Victorian houses on land he owned between the old town and the sea. This single act quickly drew Victorian tourists who came for the benefit of the bracing sea air. It was also instrumental in turning Bexhill from a quiet coastal village into the bright, bustling resort town we enjoy today.
Much of the towns charm is retained in its beautiful architecture from the Victorian and Edwardian periods. It has a wide sweeping promenade overlooking a generous beach with sea-water crammed with bathers and bright sailing boats.
In the old town visitors will find the beautiful Manor Gardens where open-air productions of plays and concerts are regularly performed. Within the grounds are the ruins of a once grand manor house. The old town houses the Bexhill Museum of Costume and Social History which tells of the life of the town throughout the centuries and has displays of costume, textiles, art and changing exhibitions.
St.Peter's Church in its tranquil churchyard surrounded by ancient graves and tombstones, dates back to Saxon times. It is a lovely old church, well worth a visit to spend a few quiet moments of silent reflection.
Edgerton Park has a boating lake, tennis courts and putting green for the energetic, peaceful walks amongst colourful flower beds, and a children's play area.
Interesting features of the town include a clock tower built to celebrate the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902, Baird Court - the home of John Logie Baird during the 1940's, a war memorial of the 1920's, and the sumptuous Victorian Town Hall.
There is a sailing and yachting club, a superb leisure centre with an indoor pool, and a nearby golf course. Horse riding facilities can be found close-by.
The town offers the very best of shopping experiences, good hotels, inns, restaurants and cafe's. It is an ideal location for exploring the wonderful Sussex coast with its wealth of castles, churches and powerful reminders of the Cinque Ports. All in all, this lovely resort offers so much to visitors whatever your requirement, it is the perfect place for an enjoyable family holiday. Planning a visit to Bexhill?
