About Battle Abbey

The Abbey Ruins -
The pope ordered William the Conqueror to build an abbey in penance for the great loss of life. The abbey was completed at the end of the 11th century. The high alter of the abbey is supposedly positioned exactly where king Harold fell with an arrow in his eye.
