About Keswick

Keswick is a pretty Market Town that nestles between the spectacular Skiddaw Mountains and the northern end of the serene Derwentwater Lake within the Lake District National Park in Cumbria.

Though relatively small in size, Keswick has become a major centre for tourism in the North Lakes and has a population of approximately 5000.

The ever changing landscape offers fantastic views and an enormous variety of walking and climbing opportunities.

Two large award winning public parks near to Keswick town centre provide picturesque wooded and garden settings to enjoy and explore along with a large open area which is perfect for picnics and playing ball games. Boating trips around Lake Derwentwater offer the opportunity to relax whilst soaking up the stunning views.

Local attractions include 'The Fitz Park Museum' where you can find original manuscripts by Wordsworth and Ruskin. Robert Southey, Wordsworths predecessor as Poet Laureate was renowned as both a famous Poet and Biographer and once lived at Greta Hall in Keswick.

The 'Moot Hall', built in 1813 is situated in the Market Square and features a very unusual one-handed clock. The building also houses an Art Gallery and the Tourist Information Centre. In 1276 Edward I granted Keswick it's market charter and still to this day the Saturday market continues to thrive.

The 'Theatre by the Lake' is a purpose built theatre which offers a varied programme of events in art and entertainment.

You can learn all about the history of pencil making at 'The Pencil Museum'.

On the nearby hilltop of Castlerigg is the Stone Circle which dates back over 4000 years and offers an outstanding view of Keswick in its beautiful valley setting.

Beatrix Potter spent her teenage years at Lingholm and Fawe Park and the Stately Homes along with the amazing surrounding scenery is said to have inspired her with material for several of her famous novels.

Other nearby attractions include, 'The Teapottery', 'Friars Cragg' and 'Crosthwaite Church'.
