Pictures of Crummock Water

in the county of Cumbria

This is Crummock Water on a cold january day in the Lake District.

About Crummock Water

The romantic setting between high fells gives Crummock Water its character. It is somewhat overshadowed by other better known lakes, but enclosed as it is between Loweswater and Buttermere, and surrounded by Grassmoor and the fells of Mellbreak, the views of the landscape are awesome in their beauty.

A footpath from Crummock Water leads to Scale Force, a rushing torrent of a waterfall that tumbles over silvery boulders in a mighty crescendo to drop 170 feet, it is Lakeland tallest waterfall. The lake is fed by numerous streams including the beck from Scale Force.

This is one of Lakeland's most tranquil spots, for centuries Crummock Water has been the haunt of poet's and artists. Today, its hauntingly beautiful scenery is attractive to walkers, and for visitors who wish to enjoy a gentle trip on the water there is a nearby centre for the hire of rowing boats.
