About Levant Mine & Beam Engine
Clinging to the wild Cornish coast topping the cliffs above Pendeen lies the restored buildings of Levant Mine with its steam powered beam engine, working once more after more than 60 years.
The mine, of interest to everyone, was operational from the 18th-century until the 1930's and was famous for its rich deposits of copper and tin, found running for more than a mile beneath the ocean.
Levant is now in the hands of the National Trust. The trust offers underground tours giving an insight into the often dangerous work of the Cornish tin and copper miners, many who lost their lives going about their work.
Visitors can also see winding and pumping shafts, an electric winding engine and much other equipment to do with the history and heritage of the Cornish mining industry.
From the site there are extensive sea and coastal views, and a short distance away visitors can also see Geevor Mine.
