About Saltburn-by-the-Sea
A lovely winding road drops down from the valley above to this small seaside resort and fishing haven. It must have been the flurry of Victorian rail-lines that opened up Saltburn, for above the cliffs overlooking the sea stand gracious Victorian buildings, and despite encroaching modernity the resort has managed to retain an air of Victorian gentility.
The resort is marked out by its Victorian pier, and although it has been heavily restored in recent times, it remains the only one of its kind in the north-east. Another colourful sight here is the beach lift, this was opened in 1884, and is a great way to avoid the trek to the top, especially after a day spent messing about in a boat or swimming in the sea. Saltburn is also one of the few places where you can still see a boat covered by a thick tarpaulin sheet berthed against the giant stones and rocks scattered at the foot of the cliffs.
Local beauty spots include some lovely wooded valley's, the Skelton Beck and the Saltburn Beck both meander through lush countryside before meeting up to join with the sea. The valley gardens give a lot of pleasure to visitors, these are full of sweet scented wild flowers, especially in springtime when the ground is carpeted with vibrant daffodils and bright bluebells. There are also some beautiful plants, often you are never far away from the aromatic smell of wild garlic.
An attractive bandstand makes the ideal place to enjoy a summer concert, performances include popular music from the shows, jazz, big band dance music and enjoyable marches from brass bands.
The town has all the usual things one expects, church, shops, inns, restaurants and friendly hotels and B & B's.
In almost every direction there are lovely views, the sea gently lapping the shore, sea-birds swooping for food, mellow sandstone cliffs washed into rainbow colours by the relentless pounding of the sea. Looking towards the hinterland, amongst the lanes are fields of wild poppy's and a scattering of typical Cleveland cottages and old farmsteads. Planning a visit to Saltburn-by-the-Sea?
