About Flag Fen Bronze Age Centre

This is a wonderful heritage museum which began when the site was uncovered during excavations of 1982. It focus's on the Bronze-Age and the Iron-Age, with superb recreated roundhouses from both periods forming the centrepiece of all the attractions to be seen.

The Museum of Flag Fen provides a display of artefacts found at the site, these include the oldest wheel in England, early cutting shears and an assortment of items from on-going excavations. They tell much about the toil of early man.

There is much here to do with the archaeology of the region. An archaeological park was laid out in 1987, it has been continuously expanded and is now landscaped with native trees and shrubs, such as would have been grown here throughout the various ages covered by Flag Fen. Most latterly this park has become an important place for wildlife. Another interesting part of the centre is the mere, this is a shallow, artificial lake constructed to preserve natural waterlogged conditions across part of the buried Bronze-Age timber platform and post alignment. The water for the mere is pumped in from nearby.

Visitors will find this a fascinating place, with much to do and see. The Mustdyke Walkway offers the opportunity to experience the places the timbers of Flag Fen were first discovered, it also gives the chance to see a display about Fenland water-levels, and once you pass under the Roman road shelter you arrive at the best place to view the Roman road.

At the site there is a Roman Herb Garden which has been cleverly laid out in traditional Roman manner with the use of typical shrubs, plants and trees.

This is an exciting place which tells us much about our early ancestors and life as it was lived then. It fully preserves our Bronze and Iron Age heritage, together with our Roman past as can be seen in the stunning grassed arena built within the confines of a dried out lake. This is used for spectacular open-air gladiatorial combats and the staging of Shakespearean theatre productions. Appropriately, the Flag Fen Arena is fast becoming one of Peterborough's foremost "Open-Air" venues.

The entrance to the site is via the heritage centre, this houses a shop and a cafe.

A visit to Flag Fen leaves everyone feeling they have gained a great deal of pleasure from a truly remarkable place.
