This one is clearly identifiable as a male Southern Hawker, by the yellow triangle situated on its' abdomen, behind the rear wing sockets. The wings on the right of the picture are not yet fully inflated. The River Stour and the ponds and streams in the North Dorset Stour Valley create an environment for a great many species of dragonflies, butterflies and moths. I photographed this rather damp specimen, sheltering from a shower in one of my Pelargoniums. The village is medium-sized with a population of about 800. Its nearest neighbouring villages are Okeford Fitzpaine, 1 mile west and Child Okeford, 1 mile northeast. There are 2 'hamlets' nearby, Hammoon and Fiddleford. The nearest town is Sturminster Newton, 3.5 miles north. The villages of Stourpaine and Durweston are situated 3 miles southeast and the town of Blandford Forum 6 miles southeast. The North Dorset trailway runs between the village and the river Stour, crossing The Wessex Ridgeway just south of the village. The iron age and Roman forts of Hambledon Hill and Hod Hill overlook the village to the east. Shillingstone and Blandford forests rise up to the west.
