I was looking for photo's of a small town in Surrey and was led to Greater London, so I started to look through to see if there were other photos the same, only to find a huge collection, principally of course of London itself.  I am not sure how others would feel about it, but may I suggest two categories - one for London itself - and one for Greater London, which seems to include parts of Surrey, Kent and Middlesex and I'm not sure where else. Of course I don't know how difficult this would be or even if others would consider this worthwhile.

Hello Cathy & welcome to POE. I am sure Chris & Sarah who own & run the site will get back to you about this as soon as they can. They have to rely quite heavily on the people who post the pictures to put the right location when posting unless they know the areas personally themselves.

Same old story Cathy, Chris and Sarah will deal with this as and when funds permit, which in fact has been discussed in another post just this last week. Obviously there are more imortant things to deal with first, but I am sure they will appreciate your input.

Hi Cathy.  Not being from England, I'm not the greatest when it comes to geography, but I looked at a lot of maps for the 2 trips we made over there.  My guess is that Greater London is classed as a county that has a lot of little towns in it, as well as the city of London.  If you look at the left panel of the site, it sorts photos by county.  Kent and Surrey are counties in their own right and if you want to see pics from there, you can open either county, or if you want a particular town or city of village, you can type it in the search box in the upper left.  It's very comprehensive, although some communities may not have any pictures if none have been submitted.  I think MIddlesex might be a part of Greater London?!?  if Paul Hilton sees this post, I'm sure he'll know.

Middlesex used to be a county but no longer is except for postal addresses. As best I know in went from Kensington westwards to Hayes at least, and as far north as Enfield.

Kent and Surrey both used to go to the south bank of the Thames in central London, but these days the closer London areas seem to use their London post code and suburb of London. It's in the 1800s censuses you'll find these counties being called by their names in central/inner London.
Middlesex gets its name from being settled by Middle Saxons.

Hi Ruth, I'm fine thanks and hope you are too. I must be missing something on the query on Cathy's post, for all the suburbs of Greater London seem to have their own photo page, as indeed, London itself also has, so what she has suggested seems already done. So, if a former place in Surrey has now come within Greater London, it should still have its own photo page for that location, for all the places under Greater London aren't jumbled together, assuming they've been put in their right place by people uploading them.

Maybe since Cathy left England for South Africa the counties have changed some, like you mentioned about Middlesex.  People over there don't seem to refer to counties as much as we do to states over here, unless I'm mistaken.  For instance, I would refer to where I live as Phoenix, Arizona, but you don't hear a lot of peple saying Fulford, North Yorkshire, or Beaulieu, Hampshire.  Or do they?

I appreciate all the responses and obviously was not clear in my explanation. I have "old" photographs of Wallington (Surrey) which I would like to upload, when I entered Wallington into the upload photos area the only choice I got for the area was Wallington, Greater London.  I then wanted to check how many other photos there were already of Wallington (don't really want to overdo them) but was faced with trawling through thousands of  Greater London photos to find them, including hundreds of photos for London, so I gave up looking and haven't uploaded the photos. Am I doing something wrong? Paul you say they have their own places as well as Greater London, but this option didn't come up with the upload page.  Maybe I should stick to adding them to County only and not a separate town, as I ended up doing with the Runnymede photo because I couldn't find anywhere else to add it (no town or attraction was found for Runnymede). You are right Ruth the counties have changed since I left, but I found if I entered the town name the upload lists it under its (now) relevant county area.  So areas I knew as being in Surrey or Kent or Middlesex are now collectively in Greater London. Does this make any more sense?

Hi Cathy---as you did, put in Wallington of which there are a few around the country. Click on the one comming under Greater London---but don't click on GL itself----and there are 2 photos there.

http://www.picturesofengland.com/England/Greater_London/Wallington

On April 1, 1915, the parish of Wallington became the Municipal Borough of Beddington and Wallington, formerly Croydon Rural District. This was abolished in 1965 by the London Government Act 1963, when it was merged with a few other boroughs to form the London Borough of Sutton;  one of 32 Boroughs that now make up Greater London, which also includes the tiny City of London itself, and the City of Westminster.

Runnymede is owned by the National Trust and was surprised to find it not listed as an Attraction in Surrey. I guess its' nearest town would be Egham, Surrey.
