Hi Sue.

Peter is quite correct with his advice regarding the manual switch. In certain cercumstance the camera will focus on part of the picture that you are not interested in, that is where the manual switch comes in handy.  You will also find that when trying to take  a picture of a distant bird that is against a plain background, such as the sky, if the subject is rather small the camera 'hunts' backwards and forwards as it trys to find the correct focus.  Again the manual focus will help. You should find the manual switch on the side of the lens, not on the camera. It is, or should be, a small slide switch marked AF/MF. At the moment it should be in the AF position.

I know what you mean about that strap, it can be a pain, I have learnt to live with it.  I beleve that there are other types of strap available, some that fasten round the waiste for instance. Check round the shops when you get the chance. The trouble with the back pack, in my opinion, is that you don't have the camera ready available to use at an instants notice and therefore can miss taking that vital image.

When I tried to view that last image that you have linked to I found that it had been removed!!

Regards Roy J.

Great advice, I knew I could depend on you guys, though I promise to read more of my book and instruction material today.

The last picture I linked to is there when I view it, Ron. Hope you get to see it.

The Bittern is still in the lilac bush asleep at the moment, so when he livens up I will go and give the manual switch a whirl.

Hi Sue. The links worked this time. Great photo's.  You have every right to be proud to both pictures.  The one of the dove is exelent. I don't think that you will  be requiring any further advice from me from now on.  The student has shown that she is now just as just as accomplished as the teacher. All you need now is pratice to build your confidence and there will be no holding you back.  Well done.

Oh I think I will RoY.

The picture of the Dove required a little bit of patience, and took me three days to get it, but I think that's what wildlife photography is all about, and I also think that is why I am so chuffed with it.

This is a great learning curve for me, and I appreciate you for sharing. Here's to more merry days of good pictures and shared knowledge.

The dove one is excellent Sue! ...3 days....I'm not surprised, after all, you cant ask it to sit and pose for you like that, you must have been quite low on the ground to get it at that angle, well done!! 10 brownie points for that one I think LOL
