About Tywyn
Marvellous holiday resort with miles of sand and shingle beach stretching towards the mouth of the River Dovey. It is perhaps best known as the terminus for the Talyllyn Railway which was established as a narrow gauge line to run up the valley to the quarries of Nant Gwernol and Abergynolwyn during 1865. The line never quite made it to the town after which it was made and when it came under threat of closure almost a century later it was taken over by a private preservation society, thus it became the first rail line in Britain to be operated privately. A small museum at Tywyn Wharf celebrates its history and visitors to the line can enjoy a journey in original carriages of a by-gone more romantic age, pulled by an historic steam engine.
The beach offers plenty of scope for fishing, bathing and a variety of sea sports including surfing and boating. The town itself has a choice of shops, restaurants and public houses. There is a leisure centre, swimming pool and a golf course can be found a short distance away.
An open-air market is held every Wednesday in the nearby market town of Machynlleth, this has excellent shopping facilities and interesting old houses, one from the 15th century.
Good holiday accommodation can be found in Tywyn, with a wide choice of hotels, comfortable bed and breakfast houses, inns, holiday cottages and caravan parks for families. A stay here provides visitors with the opportunity to enjoy a beautiful coast-line, explore little market towns, or to walk amongst the magnificent Cader-Idris range of mountains.
