The Earl of Essex and returned to Newbury to meet his Royalalist adversaries of old, with the Earl of Manchester and Oliver Cromwell amongst his commanders. The battle took place in the Speen area of Newbury with an attempt to capture the Royalist stronghold of Donnington Castle.
