'One of the ruins that Cromwell knocked about a bit' Apart from the destruction of the castle by Oliver Cromwell in 1646AD it is said that many of the old cottages in the village were built from stone 'salvaged' from the ruins over the centuries. The National Trust now ensures that what is left of the castle is preserved for posterity.
