It is The Great Conservatory Flue. This 300yrds flue leads to a 50ft high chimney beyond the garden boundary, was constructed in 1840 to conduct the smoke from the boiler furnaces below the building. The purpose was to conceal all the services from sight. Also, the practical advantages of having a long flue was to increase the draught for the fires.
