The spelling discrepancy is rumoured to be the mistake of a medievel monk. The story goes that St Guthlac chose Crowland, which was no more than an Island rising out of the surrounding fens, as the site for a hermits cell. Guthlac came to Crowland on St Bartholomews day 699 AD so he dedicated it to him.
