Pictures of Evesham

in the county of Worcestershire

This is Evesham back in july on a summer day

About Evesham

Particularly beautiful in the early spring when it is a mass of blossom, Evesham stands proudly on the river Avon right at the heart of a famous fruit and vegetable region known fondly as the ' Vale of Evesham '.

Historically, Simon-de-Montfort was slain here in the Battle of Evesham which was fought in 1265. A cross was errected in him memory.

The Almonry is a 14th - 16th century house sited in Vine Street, now contains a museum in which there are many relics of the past to view and admire. The abbey ruins include a fine bell tower and a half timbered gateway errected on an original Norman base. The town has two fine churches, All Saints with it's beautiful Lichfield chantry and the church of St. Lawrence, both of which are well worth a visit.

With its historic past to one side Evesham is very much a town of our times with a smart parade of shops and a couple of small shopping precincts all in the centre of the town. There is a busy indoor market (open tuesday, thursday, friday and saturday) a couple of good Antique shops and a wide choice of pubs. It is worth noting that from late April through to almost the end of June people travel from miles around to sample the local Asparagus that is famously grown throughout this rich fertile area and served in well known Inns quite simply as ' A round of Gras ' with Granary bread and butter - delicious!
