Pictures of Avebury Manor & Garden

a Historic Building in the town of Avebury, in the county of Wiltshire

Located just behind the museum, the Manor House gardens are superb.

About Avebury Manor & Garden

Avebury Manor is a 16th century manor house built on the site of an old monastery. The rich interior of the house shows original work and alterations and decor of the Victorian era, as well as a magnificent staircase of the 17th century.

The gardens as we look at them today have strong medieval features, despite the fact that they were laid out during Edwardian times. The gardens are beautifully tended, featuring flowers and plants to suit all seasons.

Although cared for by the National Trust, the house is leased out privately, thus only part of it is available to visitors. However, there remain many ghostly stories in connection with the house. A Royalist is said to haunt the Cavalier Room, and the ghost of a young girl, known as the "White Lady" is believed to follow visitors around the grounds. She threw herself out of an upstairs window following the death of her Cavalier lover in the Civil War. A previous owner is also said to haunt the house, his apparition is always preceded by the soft perfume of roses.

This is a lovely place to while away a pleasant hour or so, and should you perchance to meet one of Avebury Manor's ghosts, please let us know.
