About Dudley
Dudley was once known as the "Capital of the Black Country", this was not without justification, as it was here in the 17th century that coal was first used for smelting iron and its vast iron-works prospered right through to almost the end of the 20th century.
Dudley is a market town, it was granted its market charter in the 13th century, since then the lively outdoor market has been a focal point which has drawn regular visitors to the town. The lovely cobblestones upon which the market was held, and which gave the town much of its character, went when the area was renovated in the early 1980's, fortunately this did nothing to destroy the cheerfulness and warm market atmosphere. The market is open in its pedestrianised square every day except Sunday.
The ruins of Dudley Castle have loomed large over the town since it was built in Norman times, this is one of the most import castle ruins in the West Midlands, its splendid keep has sweeping views over seven counties. Apart from being a substantial romantic castle ruin, Dudley Castle is also the home of Dudley Zoo, where visitors can see 1,000 animals of 200 differing species, including endangered species.
Since the end of World War II, Dudley has undergone several periods of change, it has old areas were ancient buildings rub shoulders with new, excellent housing estates, education facilities that are second to none, and a diverse multi-cultural society.
Visitors to the town will find plenty to do and see, a good choice of pubs, cafe's and restaurants. Shops and commerce have largely replaced the old factories, hence a wide choice of shops and some good hotels can be found both in and just outside the town.
Dudley is close to the award winning Black Country Museum which can be found standing on the banks of the canal. Here visitors can see a re-created Victorian village, a host of other exciting things to do with the regions industrial heritage, and a tram once used in Dudley. Planning a visit to Dudley?
