Pictures of Upton House
About Upton House
The impressive mansion, built in the 17th century on an earlier site, was remodelled in the 1920s by the 2nd Viscount Bearsted, son of the founder of Shell Oil and later the company’s Chairman. One of the great collectors of his age, he filled the house with stunning collections of art, tapestries and porcelain, and laid out magnificent gardens in the valleys below. Amongst the outstanding collection of English and Old Master paintings presented over three floors are works by Hogarth, Raeburn, Stubbs, El Greco, Bosch, Metsu, Canaletto and Breugel, whilst the porcelain collection includes fine examples of Sèvres, Worcester tableware and figures by Bow, Chelsea and Derby. The tranquil grounds include wide lawns, a kitchen garden, dramatic terraces, water gardens, colourful borders, ornamental pools and the National Collection of Asters
