The Three Tuns HotelMarket Place, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, England
About The Three Tuns HotelAn Old Coaching Inn with a traditional welcome, in the centre of Yorkshire Market Town, made famous by James Herriot. Close to both the A1 and the A19 for business travelers and two National Parks for those with more time to spare. We are a family run hotel who give a warm Yorkshire welcome. An ideal base for exploring Yorkshire and the North. York, Harrogate and Durham are all less than an hour away and we are between two areas of outstanding natural beauty - the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors. Built in 1698 by the local Lords of the Manor, by 1740 it was a Coaching Inn. It still retains many of its original features including the staircase and the panelled dining room. The original stables still exist today. We have two bars, one non-smoking and the other with a pool table, both of which serve real ale. Our substantial home cooked meals are prepared using the very best of local produce. Meals are served in the bar and the dining room. Our Dining Room (for up to 14 people) and our Restaurant (for up to 70 people) can be booked for meetings, conferences, parties and weddings with menus designed to suit your taste and budget. Our most famous guests were William Wordsworth, accompanied by his sister Dorothy, who stayed in 1802 and 'James Herriot', better known in Thirsk as Alf Wight. Alf wrote about his life as a country vet in books such as 'All Creatures Great and Small', and regularly came in for liquid inspiration. His old surgery is nearby and is now a visitors centre.
