About Canterbury Royal Museum & Art Gallery

The Canterbury Royal Museum is housed in a magnificent Victorian building of russet brick and impressive black and white timber framing. The museum is a combination of The Royal Museum and Art Gallery together with Buffs Regimental Museum, thus it offers a celebration of the arts and honours a regiment of the British Armed Forces.

Within the building a complete room is dedicated to the work of T.S. Cooper (1803-1902) England's finest cattle painter, who was born in Canterbury. Cooper became a member of the Royal Academy, his work was much admired by Queen Victoria. Other art work exhibited covers a range of historical and contemporary paintings, together with numerous other decorative artistic pieces.

The space containing Buffs Museum - a branch of the National Army Museum is dedicated to one of England's oldest Infantry regiments, offering visitors the opportunity to learn of its history, and its worldwide service to our country. There is a good show of medals and memorabilia, this includes Victoria Crosses, and special awards for gallantry.

During the year the museum hosts a number of special events covering a wide range of subjects, these are usually informative and lively with the focus being on looking and learning. These events are suitable for all age groups, ideal for a family day out.
