About Brentwood

In the romantic days of coach travel Brentwood was a staging post on an old road to London, before this it's location close to the River Thames and the river crossing at Dartford led to it being a resting place for pilgrims heading towards Canterbury. It is now a modern town with a busy centre and a few old buildings, the most prominent being the Tudor chapel of Brentwood School.

Visitors to the area find excellent shopping and leisure facilities, Thorndon park provides "green lungs" picturesque spaces to walk, and boating lakes. There are cinema's, a theatre and plenty of pubs for night time entertainment.

A "must see" is the new Roman Catholic cathedral, this was completed in 1991 and incorporates parts of the old Victorian cathedra. It retains many old treasures, and is a church well worth looking around and spending a few moments of quiet reflection.

Brentwood Museum is unusually sited in a sexton's cottage on a nature reserve created from a disused cemetery. This records the development of Brentwood throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

The town's close proximity to London makes it a popular residential area for those working in the Capital.
