About Bridlington

Just a few miles south from the majestic cliffs of Flamborough Head, lies the wide sweep of Bridlington Bay and the resort of Bridlington.

The town has a north beach, a south beach and a harbour. It is both a seaside town and a fishing port. The size of the Trawler fleet is not as big as it used to be, but large catches are still landed at the quay side to be loaded into refrigerated lorries to be dispersed to fish markets throughout the country. For the sea angler, there are fishing trips in large cobles, and in the bay there are opportunities to fish for codling and plaice. A museum recalls the history of Bridlington harbour and shows sea-fishing methods used over the decades. The building also houses an indoor aquarium, offering fun and interest for all the family.

In recent times the busy harbour has been updated to provide mooring for private yachts, pleasure craft and speedboats. The summer months see the harbour crammed with prettily painted craft of all sizes, as more and more people take to the water for leisure and pleasure. An air of festivity is created in the town during the harbour gala when there are several events. One major attraction is the lifesaving demonstration given in Bridlington Bay by the crew of the Bridlington Lifeboat.

Bridlington's two fine sandy beaches rival those to be found in any part of the country, or Europe. They are ideal for lazing in the sun and safe for swimming. And, on an official note, it has the second best sand for sandcastles - ensuring peace for Mum and Dad, while the children spend happy hours building the castle of their dreams! The beaches are backed by a fine promenade and lovely ornamental gardens; bliss for a quiet stroll following a hearty evening meal.

Once the town of Bridlington lay about a mile inland from the resort but now the the two have merged together. The original Bridlington is now affectionately known as the Old Town and is where you will find the 13th-century priory Church of St.Mary. This wonderful ancient church has many interesting features, including carvings of mice running up the woodwork. The beautiful 14th-century gatehouse to the priory is Grade 1 listed and of historic and architectual interest. The Bayle Museum of antiquities is housed in the building, making it well worth a visit.

There are many handsome 18th-century houses and shop fronts to be seen in different parts of Bridlington. The buildings of High Street in the old town are of note, so too are the stately buildings of Royal Crescent facing towards the North Beach. A short drive out of Bridlington you will find the magnificent Elizabethan mansion, Burton Agnes Hall. The house is famous for it's magnificent collections; including modern paintings, porcelain and bronze, it is also known for it's intricate 17th-century carvings and fine furniture.

All in all there is much to recommend about Bridlington, it has stunning beaches, gorgeous seascapes and amazing views towards Flamborough Head. With a regatta in August and a sea angling week in September, this charming North East coastal resort does indeed have something for everyone.
