Originally a longhouse and set in its own grounds, Sampsons provides a welcome change from the usual anonymous motels. Our thatched farmhouse is older than Shakespeare! Sampsons farm provides the perfect retreat in which to relax and unwind. The house features medieval oak beams and screens (which originally separated the areas for family and cattle), inglenook fireplaces with log fires in the winter, and even a priest's hideaway hole. Set in its own grounds in a sleepy village, Sampsons Farm has been owned and run by the Bell family for two generations. We are well practised in creating the perfect conditions for a restful holiday or business trip. A range of pretty modern en suite rooms is available in our purpose designed barn conversions around the farm courtyard. All rooms have central heating, television, hot drinks facility and some have country views. For a special treat we have a luxurious suite with balconies and sun deck. Our ground floor apartment is perfect for families, groups and guests with dogs - Children are only accepted in the Teigngrace Suite - whilst cosy rooms under the thatch in the farmhouse are also offered. After a good nights sleep, breakfast is taken in the farmhouse dining room. Our happy hens provide the eggs. Bracken House Hotel, situated on the periphery of Exmoor in Bratton Fleming, seven miles east-north-east of Barnstaple. Formerly a rectory, Bracken House has been converted into a small hotel without losing the general ambiance of a country house. It is delightfully situated in its own little world of eight peaceful acres, with streams and ponds. The garden attracts lots of birds including regular nuthatches, housemartins, ravens, occasional woodpeckers, buzzards circling overhead, and elusive wild tawny owls. It is also home to our resident injured owls. Grey wagtails frequent the pond with mallards and moorhens breed, and early risers may catch a heron or kingfisher. Located at 750 feet above sea level, there are magnificent views over rolling hills and wooded combes to the Taw Estuary and Hartland Point in the far distance. Our bedrooms vary quite a lot - One was the Rector's, one was his dressing room and another was the guest room, where the Bishop would stay. They all have en suite facilities including toilets and washbasins. Six have baths with showers, whilst the other two have walk-in showers. All bedrooms are equipped with hot drink facilities, bottled Devon water, hairdryers, colour televisions, push-button radios, books and magazines.
