About Totnes

This pretty town is situated in a delightful position on the River Dart. It claims to be one of England's oldest boroughs. Totnes was initially fortified by the Saxons who were quickly followed by the Normans, who built the castle which now lies in ruins. The Normans also built the beautiful Perpendicular church of St.Mary, which has a tower that soars to a magnificent height of 120ft.

Of the old medieval town only two gateways remain and other features include a picturesque butterwalk and several Elizabethan and Georgian properties. There is a lively and busy quay and sailing boats are made in local yards. Totnes is the starting point for pleasure trips along the River Dart to Dartmouth.

This is an ancient town that offer much of interest and places to see include; The Tudor Merchants House, the beautiful Guildhall and the romantic ruins of the old Norman castle. Dartington Hall, Berry Pomeroy Castle and Torbay Aircraft Museum. The town offers excellent all round facilities, good inns and public houses and restaurants that specialise in seafood. It is a town with a wealth of architectural treasures that are a joy to explore.
