About Milton Keynes
The town of Milton Keynes was created in 1967, since 1971 it has been the home of the Open University. It is a stylish town with good shopping centres and facilities for leisure and sporting activities.
Of interest to visitors to the town is Milton Keynes Museum, this preserves the history of the town and its area from the early 19th century through to the present day. The museum is housed in a lovely old Victorian farmhouse, collections include items in connection with social, domestic and agricultural history in connection with North Buckinghamshire and South Northamptonshire. Regular changing displays ensure there is always something to interest every member of the family.
Fascinating Norman churches can be found at Bradwell, Castlethorpe and Little Linford, these are in stark contrast to the modern building of Milton Keynes new Roman Catholic church dedicated to Saint Edward the Confessor, this was consecrated by Bishop Leo McCartie on June 7th 1991.
A dominant feature of the town centre is the dome crowning the Church of Christ the Cornerstone, this is Britain's first purpose-built ecumenical city church. It's massive dome is the highest point of the town, it is topped by a cross designed by artist Alun Evans of Stroud, this was placed in position during a church service on Good Friday 1991 attended by over 1,000 people. Other features of the building include stained glass by Alexander Beleschenko.
The town offers a good choice of multi-cultural restaurants and pubs. Just outside Milton Keynes you will find the warmly welcoming atmospheric thatched 15th century Nags Head. Visitors to the inn can enjoy food and drink in a comfortable olde-worlde atmosphere of old beams and low ceilings in rooms with traditional fireplaces.
The Grand Union Canal flows close-by giving opportunities for boating, and the River Great Ouse can be found close to Newport Pagnall. There are many ancient hamlets surrounding Milton Keynes making it an ideal centre in which to stay whilst exploring both the old and the new of Buckinghamshire. Planning a visit to Milton Keynes?
