About Denham

This picturesque village is set in rich wooded countryside. It was mentioned in the Doomsday Book, and it has many attractive brick and timbered cottages, covered in colourful foliage with pretty doorways leading straight onto the road. It is a village of narrow lanes down which there are handsome properties, most of which are the homes of the rich and famous. Sir John Mills was a resident her for many years, and Cilla Black still lives here.

At the heart of the village is a beautiful green, standing close to this is The Falcon, a 16th-century olde-worlde village inn of immense charm and character. There are other old inns, and a small Wesleyan chapel of 1820.

The parish church of St.Mary is agreeably placed amongst limes, beeches and cypress trees. It has a sturdy clock tower, and is of 15th-century origin. Inside the church visitors can see a 500 year old wall painting depicting Judgement Day. The oldest feature of the church is its beautiful 13th-century font, which is mounted on slender round pillars. The church has brasses and other memorials including a table tomb showing the figures of Sir Edmund Peckham and his wife. Sir Edmund served Henry VIII as Master of the Mint.

Over the years the village has spread out somewhat and is now a complexity of Denham Village, Denham Green, New Denham and Higher Denham. However, the village mostly retains the characteristic's of a valley of the Colne with pleasant meadows and little streams. It is a lovely place to tarry for a while, soaking up the romantic atmosphere, that mostly has long since gone.
