About Bowness on Windermere

This is the principal resort on Lake Windermere, it is a town crammed with quaint narrow streets jammed full of summer tourists which sprawls along the shores of the lake somewhere between Waterhead and Lakeside.

Sweeping upwards from the fringe of the lake you can immediately see the legacy of the town's Victorian "Hey Day" in the fine buildings that remain from a period when wealthy industrialists from Lancashire built premier residences around the lake. Many of these fine buildings have since become luxury hotels.

The parish church of Bowness is dedicated to Saint Martin, this was built in 1483 and shows restoration work from the 19th century. It is a beautifully proportioned church with many church treasures that are well worth seeing, a few minutes spent here in silent reflection will prove well worth while.

Windermere had been made famous by both artists and poets, but it was of course the railways that brought the masses, they had heard of the splendid scenery and came to see it for themselves. Today, even when crowded Bowness still manages to retain a "genteel air" coupled with a friendly ambience. It is a fascinating place, exciting for its little shopping streets, the speed boats on the water and its numerous attractions. It is even more remarkable for its majestic views. If you chance to visit the Lake District National Park, Bowness-on-Windermere offers much for every member of the family and makes a splendid place to stay.
