About Bath Pump Rooms
Bath is an important Spa and cultural centre, one of its most famous buildings is the elegant Pump Room of the baths built centuries ago by the Romans who quickly discovered the medicinal quality of the Bath waters. They established what was then known as the Aquae Sulis, the most fashionable spa town of Roman Britain, it became a Mecca for the Roman upper class who visited in droves to sample its waters. Today, these building continue to be one of this gorgeous city's main attractions.
The magnificent Bath Building with its attached temple then stood in the town centre. Within the complex of the late 18th-century is the great chamber, this looks down over the old Roman baths when one can imagine the Romans in scant costume enjoying the revitalising water! Today, for a small fee visitors can sample the water, but because of its high mineral content it is not to everyone's liking.
The Pump Room Chambers have been rebuilt and modified a number of times, initially they were built in the style of an orangery in 1704, since then they have been altered twice, this was in 1751 and in 1796 when the building was completely rebuilt.
The Pump Room we see today is of graceful elegant proportions, it is used mainly as a restaurant for visitors who may enjoy after-noon tea in sumptuous surroundings whilst listening to classical music.
Bath is a beautiful city where there is much to delight each and every visitor.
