Wothorpe Towers

The Tower house was built by the Cecils in circa 1600 in the style of a fortified tower as a subsidiary house to their main residence at Burghley . Following the death of Thomas Cecil in 1623 , the house was leased to members of the Cecil family and later to the Second Duke of Buckingham . It was used finally as a Dower House. In the mid-18th century however , Brownlow the 9th Earl decided that the house was no longer required . Some of the stone was removed and re-used in the stables at Burghley House and the cupolas were removed in the mid-19th century . The whole building , including the stables and an octagonal cockpit , have been allowed to fall into disrepair but are currently under restoration .

St Leonard's Priory - part of the fine transitional west front . The existing priory build in 1090 , supposedly on the site of a monastery which was founded by St Wilfrid in 658 and destroyed in the Danish invasion . The impressive west front was constructed about 1150.

Stamford Meadows

Originally called the Water Meadows, the Meadows is pleasant place to picnic, recreate, watch or feed the birds. It provides level walking along the River Welland, where you’ll find the Boudicea plaque recording her pursuit of the Romans, and is the starting point for the Jurassic Way. There are footpaths to Easton-on-the-Hill and Tinwell.

Town Bridge at Stamford

Edward Browning (1816-1882) was the son of the Stamford architect Bryan Browning (1773-1856), who designed Bourne Town Hall . Edward became a successful architect in his own right . There are around 30 Listed buildings attributed to him or associated with him, including the stone bridge erected over the River Welland at Stamford in 1849 . The bridge formed part of the old "Great North Road" (A1) and the town had to manage with Britain's north-south traffic through its narrow roads until 1960, when the bypass was built to the west of the town, only a few months after the M1 opened. A look at the map will show that it is only one road bridge over the Welland (excluding the A1) in this area so one can imagine what a "bottleneck" it was and the horrendous traffic problems there must have been here in the 1950s.

The church of St Martin's in Stamford is a notable example of late 15 century architecture. It was rebuilt between 1482 and 1485 and has been little altered since, apart from the extension to the North Chapel, which was doubled in size in 1865. The chapel houses the tombs of the Cecil family, including the monument to William Cecil, first Lord Burghley who was chancellor to Queen Elizabeth I and that of John Cecil, 5th Earl of Exeter.

St George's Antiques , Stamford . A joyous coincidence of geography and geology has allowed Stamford to remain the "finest stone town in England", its prosperity drawn from the wool trade and its historical position as a mail coach inter-change on the Great North Road almost halfway between London and York. Stamford was the first town in the country to create a conservation area in 1967 .

St Peter`s Vale , Stamford . The recorded history of Stamford goes back well over 1,000 years. It first came to prominence in the 9th and 10th centuries when it became one of the 5 controlling boroughs of Danelaw. It was one of the first towns to produce glazed wheel-thrown pottery after the departure of the Romans. Stamford prospered under the Normans with an economy based mainly on wool; it was particularly famous for its woven cloth called haberget. The town's excellent communication routes via the Great North Road and via the River Welland to the North Sea ensured the success of its trade. By the 13th century Stamford was one of the 10 largest towns in England. It had a castle, 14 churches, 2 monastic institutions, and 4 friaries; parliaments met here and there was a tradition of academic learning which finally led to the establishment of a short-lived breakaway university in the mid 14th century. Many buildings survive from this period including the early 12th-century St Leonard's Priory; the magnificent early 13th-century tower of St Mary's Church; the rich 13th-century arcades in All Saints' Church; fine 13th-century stone-built hall houses and undercrofts, and the 14th-century gateway to the Grey Friary.
