Inveraray Castle

An example of Gothic Revival architecture. It is the Seat of the Duke of Argyll, HQ of the Clan Campbell. The original Castle was built in the 15th century by Colin Campbell, the first Earl of Argyll. This is the 18th century version built on the site of the original when it fell into a state of disrepair.

Inveraray Castle

Inveraray Castle

The design of the present Castle was started in 1743 by Sir John Vanbrugh for the 2nd Duke of Argyll. After Vanbrugh's death, construction started in 1746 with Roger Morris and William Adam as architects. They both died in 1748, and John and Robert Adam were architects up to the completion in 1789.
