Hayes Barton is the birthplace of Sir Walter Raleigh and lies on the edge of Woodbury Common, near the village of East Budleigh Unfortunately this was as close as we could get on Sunday 17/5/15

Woodbury Common

Woodbury Common is a piece of relatively high ground comprising mainly of heathland with stunning views of the Exe estuary on one side and views down to the English Channel on the other when the views are not obscured by mist, rain, fog or summer haze. The sunsets can be breathtaking. Managed by the Clinton Devon Estates, Woodbury Common is a great place for walking, cycling, or a picnic, etc. In summer the common is a beautiful mass of yellow gorse and purple heather, and a good source of wild blackberries. Even after a period of dry weather, boggy areas remain on the common and care is needed if wandering off the main paths. Part of the common is crossed by the East Devon Way.
