Gladiator

A replica of a 17th century Borghese Gladiator statue has been placed on a plinth at one of Yorkshire's most famous abbeys, Whitby Abbey. English Heritage has overseen the £80,000 project to re-cast the gladiator sculpture which historians believe once stood in front of the spectacular Banqueting House – now the abbey's visitor centre – built by a powerful Whitby landowner, Sir Hugh Cholmley II, in the 17th century. Hornton stone, a ferruginous limestone, was quarried in several places near the village and, apart from its use in the building of cottages, houses and churches, etc. in Hornton and all the other nearby villages it was also used in buildings such as St. Paul's Cathedral in London, Canterbury Cathedral and university buildings in Oxford and Cambridge.
