Knowle Vineyard

Knowle Vineyard

A road called Dalditch Lane, from Knowle village, has a vineyard that produces Devon wine. It is called Lily Vineyard because lilys grow profusely at the entrance. Here we see the vines in rows up the hill, catching the sun.

Tidwell House near Knowle

Tidwell House near Knowle

The houses on the right belong to Tidwell Barton but the large brick building is Tidwell House hiding behind a large tree. Tidewell is named after a well in a field in front of the House. The water in the well is warm and never freezes, it rises and lowers in accordance with the tide. A human skeleton and bones have been found in the well and it lends an eerie feeling to the house and area.

Knowle Lane

Knowle Lane

Knowle Lane starts at Budleigh Salterton and firstly travels through Little Knowle all the way to the village of Knowle. Mid way on the journey is this bend showing a thatched house on the right that is in very early sepia photographs of the area. It has little changed but newer buildings have been built along the time line.

Bluebells on Dalditch Railway Line.

Bluebells on Dalditch Railway Line.

The Railway came to Budleigh Salterton in 1897, firstly via a branch line from Tipton St, John, off the main Waterloo-Exeter line. Although the first sod for the line through to Exmouth was cut by Lady Gertrude Rolle in 1895, it was not completed until 1903. The undertaking had proved expensive and complicated, owing to the erection of a viaduct across Dalditch Lane. The cost of the branch line from Tipton to Salterton alone was £80,000, and the whole expense of the enterprise was borne by the Rolle Estate.

Knowle horses

These two horses were very curious. They were looking at all who passed by on Dalditch Lane but were well shaded in the trees that shaded the rickety gate. They both gratefully accepted a handful of freshly pulled verge grass to munch.

Dalditch Railway Bridge

The main railway line used to run from Budleigh Salterton to Exmouth and crossed this bridge as Dalditch Lane passed below on its way to Knowle. The bridge now carries a cycle lane and footpath since the trains no longer run.

Cottage on Dalditch Lane

Cottage on Dalditch Lane

Dalditch Lane is a green lane at the end of Bear Lane, Knowle and leads downhill passing this cottage that has a very elaborate rainwater system. Water caught by the gutters is diverted along chutes, funnels, water mills and flumes that animate figures created by the plumber.

Tidwell

Tidwell

In 1730 the Tidwell Manor was bought by a barrister from Exeter named Waldron, who built the Tidwell House that we see today, partly hidden by a tree on the left. The property was finally acquired by Lord Rolle in the last century. There is a curious legend attached to Tidwell, pertaining to the time of Gabriel St. Clere. He is said to have declared "that neither he, nor his family could prosper while one stone stood upon another of that house, in which so many sins had been committed". About that time, it was rumoured that in the fishponds were found "a dead man, booted and spurred, and the bones of diverse children"

Tidwell

Tidwell

As you leave Knowle on the way to East Budleigh the road passes an old Manor House called Tidwell, which is now a hotel. The name comes from a well in the grounds of the Manor that has water which seems to rise and fall with the tide. Tidwell Manor is to the left and Tidwell Barton is the name of the cluster of houses to the right.
