Tanfield Village

Tanfield Village

I took this picture of Tanfield village green one spring many years ago. This is a scan of the photograph I took with a pre-digital camera and it shows St Margaret's Church, the green and trees in blossom. The whetstone was only an item of interest and never used for anything.

Tanfield – Top o’ Black

Tanfield – Top o’ Black

In Durham the locals talk Geordie and footpaths are called “The black” – referring to the tarmacadam. Although the path to this view view is gravel in places and although there is no tarmacadam in sight it’s still called “gannin to’top o’black” - where you see Tanfield church tower with Stanley on the skyline.

Tanfield Church

Tanfield Church

The parish church of Tanfield is St.Margaret of Antioch. Little is known for certain about the 'early' days of St Margaret's, but it is generally believed that St Cuthbert's monks chose Tanfield to hide the saints remains from the invading Danish hordes, around 900AD, long before his remains were buried at Durham. After leaving Tanfield, his monks then moved onto Chester-Le-Street, where they established a new monastery, and a chapel-at-ease in the village of Tanfield. Since then, there have been 3 different churches built on the current site, little is known about the first.

On the approach to Tanfield from the Tantobie end, it is necessary to pass "Sleepy Valley". It is, in fact, a council estate but pleasantly laid out in the valley of Farleith Burn. The area is called Sleepy by the all the locals.

Tanfield road sign

This is a road sign that was erected when roadworks were being done after a blind bend in Tanfield. I don't think it could be found in the Highway Code and it was only a temporary sign!
