About Lancing

The dominant feature of the district is Lancing College chapel, an impressive church standing on high ground which is of immense, almost cathedral-like proportions, with a vaulted roof rising to a height of 90 feet. The chapel, founded in 1868 and was dedicated in 1911, one of its finest features is its stunning Rose window, a dedication of 1978. Other treasures include tapestries and rich carvings, stall canopies thought to have come from Eaton College, a brass lectern, bronze candlesticks and alter silver. The chapel is a constant source of delight offering visitors a memorable visit to a remarkable church.

Lancing is found between Worthing and Shoreham-by-the-Sea, it has a pleasant coastal atmosphere and an enjoyable mix of properties from several periods. It is a well know region for wild-life, with the widewater lagoon being of great interest to naturalists and botanists. Here there are small pockets of land where Blackthorn and Hawthorne have developed, but mostly the ground cover consists of Parsley, Goosegrass and Nettles, with an abundance of wild shrubs interspersed along the shore. The flora here attracts numerous colourful butterflies, including the delicate Clouded Yellow, Painted Lady and Common Blue. Sea Thrift flourishes here and this is the only known habitat of Ivell's Sea Anemone, believed by some to have been long extinct.

The village church dedicated to St.James the Less dates from the 13th century, but shows work from an earlier church including the moulded south doorway which is believed to date from the year 1200. Amongst its treasures is a font from late in the 12th century. The church partially lost its tower in the 17th century and was heavily restored during the first half of the 19th century.

Next to Lancing's attractive church is a War Memorial to those of the village who died in the two World War's of the last century, this occupies a place of calm and is a fitting tribute to those who died.

Visitors here will find plenty to make their visit enjoyable, there are a few shops, pleasant hospitable inns, and pleasing holiday accommodation for those wishing to stay awhile.

This favoured place close to the River Adur and the tranquillity of the South Downs, offers visitors a quieter alternative to Worthing or Brighton. It makes a pleasant destination for exploring the lovely Sussex coast, or the rolling hinterland of Downs, which are dotted with pretty villages, and fringed by the South Downs Path.
