About Portishead

From Portishead there are fine views across the span of sea towards the coast of South Wales, these take in the wide sweep of the Severn estuary and the Severn Bridge.

The town has a history stretching back to Roman times. It's docks, like its old Victorian industries have long since gone, and its old harbour is replaced with a modern marina around which there are situated new up market housing.

Fortunately there are still some interesting Victorian properties to be seen and Battery Point, where guns were placed to guard the Severn estuary continues to attract visitors.

Most of the coast along here is little more than a shore-line of mud and rocks draped with seaweed. However, there are some entertainments, sea fishing and boat trips can be arranged and there is a sailing club.
