About Clun Forest

The beautiful Clun Forest lies in a remote part of Shropshire, it was once a Royal hunting ground for Kings, Princes and their fair ladies. Much of the old woodlands of those far off days has vanished with new woods being replanted mostly to the east of Clun. This is a spacious lonely area where wide moorlands are roamed by hardy Clun sheep. Endless miles of tranquillity are disturbed only by the call of the plover or the sweep of rising buzzards and ravens. Looking around it is difficult to think that this peaceful bracken covered area, dotted with farmhouses was once the scene of fierce fighting in the days of Border skirmishes. Offa's Dyke runs through here, and close-by stands Sowdley Wood, one of the most picturesque of all Shropshire's woodlands.

These woods are delightful places to visit, they share between them a wealth of flora and fauna, showing mosses, lichen and ferns. A stark contrast to the fresh green leaves of summer is provided by the autumnal showing of scarlet toadstools and puffballs. Nearby, bathed in sunlight, the Clun meanders on its way, watering fertile valleys and golden corn fields hemmed in by wood-capped hills.

Essentially a place of peace, these woods bordering with the Welsh marshes provide a paradise for walkers. There is much to explore and discover. The hills are full of Bronze-Age remains, stone circles, fragments of forts, hilltop settlements and long buried weapons and tools. It is a solitary place appealing to naturists and those with a sense of the mystique of long ago.

Clun Forest and nearby woodland provide a perfect place for a family day out or a romantic woodland walk.
