About Whitstable

A pleasant Kentish resort were everyone can have a jolly good time. They know how to do things here - from catching oysters since Roman times to celebrating May Day - it is all done with gusto and relish.

The town is pleasantly situated just off the mouth of the Swale. It is around one hour's drive from London and a hop, skip and a jump from the beautiful Cathedral city of Canterbury. A sedate atmosphere pervades this little town which in recent years has become a sought after coastal retreat. Amongst it's charms is a surprising mix of architectural designs covering several centuries, these include rows of prettily painted weather-boarded fishermen's cottages crammed around the bay and hidden down picturesque lanes and alleyways. Find your way to the harbour and you will be immediately struck by one of the town's most poignant reminders of its seafaring past. Starvation Point, is now a permanent memorial to those who lost their lives at sea but it's name echoes of the time when out of work seamen congregated there in the hope of some worthy sea captain hiring hands for a voyage at sea.

From Tankerton beach, a long finger of shingle juts out into the sea. The wind can be a little keen round here but when the sun is shining and the tide is low, it is an enjoyable place for collecting shells and sea fossils.

Whitstable offers visitors a diverse range of experiences and visitor attractions. It has an excellent reputation for hospitality with accommodation to suit all tastes. It has a lovely promenade with cafe's, bars, speciality restaurants and inviting shops. Beyond the coast there is a hinterland of lovely countryside where you can seek out tiny hamlets, villages of picturesque cottages with colourful, well tended gardens, beautiful oasthouses - some attractively converted for weekend retreats, medieval churches and a wealth of historic inns. In this rich and varied landscape of river valleys, woods and marshes there are unrivalled opportunities for exploring wildlife, here you will find natural habitats as well as interesting nature reserves and wildlife parks. Both coast and countryside are a Mecca for bird-watching enthusiasts.

Your holiday here can be all that you want it to be and much more - Whitstable is a gloriously open place with a gentle pace and innumerable shades of light. It is a holiday makers joy and an artist's paradise.

Visitor Attractions include: Whitstable Museum and Gallery, Druidstone Wildlife Park, Herne Bay Museum, Westgate Tower Museum, Margate Caves, Dolphin Yard Sailing Barge Museum, Howells Wild Animal Park, Leeds castle - a short drive away this lovely castle was home to six of England's Queens, take a trip along the Swale Estuary or even enjoy a sea fishing trip.
