About Red House

Philip Webb (1831-1915) was the first significant architect of the Arts and Crafts movement, and the Red House he built in 1859 for William Morris at Bexleyheath remains today as the movements first monument.

The Red House was the only house commissioned by Morris. All of the original interiors, including furniture where fashioned by both Morris and Philip Webb, with the influence of Edward Burne-Jones being clearly seen in the outstanding paintings and stained glass.

Surrounding the house is a delightful garden, this was laid out by William Morris to act as a back-drop to the lavish Arts and Craft interior of the stylish red brick building.

Interestingly, the house remained a family home for over 150 years. After going through many changes it was finally acquired by the National Trust in 2003 who took care to preserve it so that visitors could see the house as it was when purchased and as it would have been when originally created in 1859. Thus, the Red House is a glorious celebration of the work of the leading artists of a movement that still arouses the interest of the art world and anyone with an interest in style, fabrics, glass and paintings.

A small tea room is open for refreshments, this also stocks a range of interesting books and gifts with an emphasis on William Morris.
