About Somerford Keynes

Rural Somerford Keynes lies amid the rich water meadows of lovely Cotswold countryside. It has picturesque, honey coloured stone houses and cottages and a magnificent church with foundations dating from circa 685. Surrounded by a churchyard showing imposing stone tombs and ancient grave-side tablets, All Saints church has a Norman font and 13th-century windows. The square, turreted tower dates from the 18th-century, while the Anglo-Saxon doorway is said to be a relic from a previous village church of the 7th-century.

One of the focal points of the village is the ancient arched bridge spanning the sprightly waters of the Thames. Close to its source, this is thought to be one of the first crossings over the river and one of the most attractive. A short distance away, there is a manor house dating from around the 15th-century and close to the church the substantial Old Rectory was built at the turn of the 19th-century.

Vast acres of private estates dominate this very special corner of England, some with dense woodland and fine lawns sweeping to the reeded banks of the Thames. Wildlife abounds throughout the area where often you can catch a glimpse of a sly fox, squirrel or badger.

Fishing is available in the area and there are lovely country walks, good restaurants and splendid inns. South Cerney is within easy driving distance as is the Roman town of Cirencester with it excellent facilities, fine galleries and antique shops.
