About Ablington

Graceful, picture-postcard Cotswold village where little seems to have changed for centuries. The River Coln snakes through Ablington, it's silvery, reed strewn waters reflecting glorious silky stone houses which have stood in this lovely landscape for centuries. Not much disturbs the peace and, drifting water only happy-trout reaching for early spring Mayfly disturbs the quiet, drifting water. The River Coln is famous for the treasures along it's banks, Bibury being perhaps the best known.

Ablington, however was made famous by the writer J.Arthur Gibbs in his evocative tale of daily life - A Cotswold Village. The book is a perfect Portrayal of village life in Victorian times. This is an idyllic place, where disused farm building have been restored to [provide weekend retreats or, handsome permanent residences.

The beautiful Elizabethan Manor House where Gibbs lived, dates from 1590. Ablington House, which dates from the 17th-century, is another enchanting property in a fairy-tale setting. Its iron gates are adorned with stone lions, which once guarded The Houses of Parliament.

Adding lustre to this picturesque patchwork of timeless charm, is a number of pretty cottages haphazardly set around the village, each fronted with a colourful garden. One such cottage belonged to John Brown - a local gamekeeper, who provided the inspiration for the character Tom Peregrine, in J. Arthur Gibbs's book.

This harmonious village is a 'must' for anyone exploring the Cotswolds.
