Small stream leading into Derwentwater

This small stream runs into Derwentwater behind the camera not very far from the launching area for the boats. Quite often seen it like this although it has been much higher

Decisions to be made?

Decisions to be made?

Having come over Catbells and down to the bottom of the southern end this sign appears. As it happens I took the road for about 1/4 mile to join the Cumbria Way and then branch off to go back up the eastern side of Derwentwater. Next time will make the journey into Grange only a mile, and not been there for best part of 35 years while on a cycling weekend staying at YHA

Catbells southern descent

Catbells southern descent

Looking back up to Catbells from the southern descent which leads to Grange and then back up the Eastern side of Derwentwater to Keswick. Must go into Grange next time rather than cutting it short at the bottom of Derwentwater

Catbells ... The final push!!

Catbells ... The final push!!

Finally arriving at the higher of the twin peaks of Catbells. You can see where the path starts the fade away and the scrambling begins. But as said before .. well worth the effort. An the little lad in front was about 8 or 9!!

Catbells first peak

Catbells first peak

Only a couple of hundred yards now to the top of the first of Catbell's two peaks. The higher and second of the two can be seen behind. Was getting just a little breezy by now.

Catbells to Bassenthwaite

Catbells to Bassenthwaite

Halfway up the first of Catbell's peaks, looking back along the northern end of the Newland Valley, towards Bassenthwaite Lake which is the only designated LAKE in the Lake District. On the right the small wooded hill of Swinside with Braithwaite village in the centre backed by the wooded slopes on the Whinlatter Forest Park. Behind which is the domed peak of Barf. May 2014

Catbells Summit 1 mile . . .

Catbells Summit 1 mile . . .

Catbells Summit 1 mile the sign says and this is just the first 10 yards of it. Fortunately it is not stepped all the way, a very good path in reality, and does ease off a bit at times. Took me 1 hour almost to the minute. The very top, the second peak, involves a little bit scrambling but nothing serious.Need to do it again in better weather

Catbells getting closer!!

Catbells getting closer!!

On the boat now on route to Hawes End just round the end of the trees to make the ascent of Catbells. Quite an imposing sight from the diminutive Keswick Cruises launch

Keswick landing stages and Catbells

Keswick landing stages and Catbells

The Derwentwater landing stages at Keswick, with Derwent Isle and Catbells behind. Was waiting for the boat to take me over to Hawes End in order to make my attack on Catbells. A few more of Catbells to follow for which I make no apology!! If you look VERY closely you might just be able to make out the post which has the carved Owl, images of which I showed last year

Catbells and Derwent Isle

Catbells and Derwent Isle

Another view of Catbells looming up behind Derwent Isle which is an inhabited and private island. If you have been to specsavers recently you might just be able to make out the zigzag path leading up the slope to the first of the two peaks.

Catbells from Hope Park, Keswick

Catbells from Hope Park, Keswick

The unmistakeable twin peaks of Catbells, with Derwent Isle in mid distance. I have been here when only the top couple of bars of the gate have been visible over the water. Been on the 'to-do' list for some time but this was the day I decided to go over Catbells so a few more images will follow. May 5 2014

Yes, I'm a sucker for these boats, but if the will insist on leaving lying around what is a man with a camera supposed to do?

Why the boats again? Because they nicely fill the foreground for Lady Derwentwater, Derwent Isle and the ever impressive Catbells

These rowing boats at Keswick, as with those at Windermere, Ambleside and Coniston make such wonderful subjects you cannot help but keep pressing the shutter button. More to follow maybe.

Keswick Jetty Owl

Keswick Jetty Owl

This amazing carved owl sits proudly on top of one of the stanchions of the newly widened main jetty at Keswick. A really superb piece of artwork which I can only think must have been worked 'in-situ' after the jetty was finished.
