Carfax and Carfax Tower The centre of life since Saxon times, Oxford's busy crossroads is named Carfax from the latin word quadrifurcus, which means four ways. The most prominent building at Carfax is the 14th century tower of St Martin's Church which has a clock and ornate quarterboys in Roman military uniform which strike every quarter of the hour. The quarterboys are exact replicas of originals that are looked after in the Museum of Oxford. Carfax Tower is another great place for visitors to witness the magnificent views of Oxford's famous skyline of dreaming spires.

Magdalen Bridge Magdalen College ( pronounced Maudlin) was founded in 1458 by Bishop Waynflete on the site of the 13th century Hospital of St John, of which some is incorporated into the existing college. The college stands in grounds next to the slow moving River Cherwell, at the ancient crossing place of Magdalen Bridge. Around the college are grounds that are open to exploration by visitors in the afternoon. It is a beautiful place to take a relaxing walk along the peaceful leafy pathways and along the riverbank, where you can even enjoy a ride in a punt, either self-poled, or chauffeured. Next to the river is the wonderful Botanic Garden which was founded in 1621 and is another beautiful scenic place to relax, also giving access to the river.

Broad Strret, Oxford Famous for its bookshops, Broad Street was originally the site of a deep town ditch outside the city wall where the Protestant Bishops Latimer, Ridley and Cramner were burned at the stake. A cross in the road outside Balliol marks the spot where they died in 1555 and 1556 for rejecting the doctrine of the catholic church. In the 13th century, Broad Street was used for horse trading but the advent of many beautiful buildings has since given it a distinguished air. Among these buildings are: Balliol College, founded in the 1260's by John De Balliol as a penance for insulting the Bishop of Durham. Trinity College, built on the site of an early college that educated the monks of Durham. Exeter College, founded in 1314 by the Bishop of Exeter, a prominent courtier who was murdered by enemies of the king. The Sheldonian Theatre, a marvellous classical building that opened in 1669 and was the first large scale work of Sir Christopher Wren, who modelled it on the Roman theatre of Marcellus. The Museum of the History of Science, and Blackwell's Bookshop, which was opened in 1879 by Benjamin Blackwell, founder of the now world famous family business.
