More info about Cowflop Bottom At grid reference SX 614 814 are some old tinners workings in a small gully known as 'Cowflop Bottom' of which Hemery notes the following, "The northern sector of the head basin (Broada Marsh Stream) is adorned by cowflops (foxgloves) and is consequently known as 'Cowflop Bottom'". Other Dartmoor names for the foxglove are: Long Purples, Pixie Gloves, Pop-dock, and Purples. It is thought that the name foxglove came from a corruption of 'folk's glove' which refers to the little folk or piskies, hence also 'Pixie Gloves'. Another tradition suggests that foxglove refers to the piskies tying the flowers over the foxes paws in order that they could tread silently when raiding the chicken coops. I have once heard the story that if ever you hear the flowers or 'bells' ringing then it is an omen of your impending death. I copied this info from Google. We have seen a few Foxgloves over the years there,

Dartmoor

Taken a few years ago Dartmoor The Devonport Leat was a leat constructed in the 1790s to carry fresh drinking water from the high ground of Dartmoor to the expanding dockyards at Devonport, Devon, England. It is fed by three Dartmoor rivers: the West Dart, the Cowsic and the Blackabrook. It was originally designed to carry water all the way to Devonport Dockyard, but has since been shortened and the operational part of the leat now stops near the Burrator dam. The water goes via underground pipes to the water treatment works at Dousland with the excess going into the Burrator Reservoir which provides most of the water supply of Plymouth. For part of the route to Dousland the pipes utilise the route of the old Plymouth Leat and the route of the disused Yelverton to Princetown Railway. Prior to the installation of the piped supply to Dousland the water was used for a hydro electric turbine located near Yelverton Reservoir and fed by a 12-inch-diameter (300 mm) pipe.
