Whitstable Castle and Gardens

Whitstable Castle or Tankerton Towers, as it was first called, was a residence for the Pearson family in the late 1790’s. It has continually been developed and improved throughout its history by successive owners, most notably, Wynn Ellis. Wynn Ellis was born in 1790, the son of a coachman. He prospered in London as a draper and silk importer. Ellis added the tower and clock to the Castle’s eastern side and long west facade, as well as extending the castle grounds. Recently renovated thanks to Lottery funding; the castle grounds are a haven for you to relax and take in the sea air or enjoy tea and cake whilst surrounded by the beautiful rose gardens. Today, the castle is managed by Whitstable Castle Trust, an organisation made up of local volunteers and elected councillors.
