Piddles Wood, Sturminster Newton. Piddles Wood is an excellent example of ancient woodland, carpeted with colour in spring and summer. Rotational coppicing of the hazel understorey is carried out amongst the oak standards. One of the many Nature Reserves managed by Dorset Wildlife Trust. Sturminster Newton in Dorset This modern, design-winning property stands on the plot of a former cottage occupied by Thomas Hardy. The two years spent at Sturminster Newton ('Stourcastle' in one of his books)he described as idyllic. Whilst living there he wrote "Return of the Native". Sturminster Newton in Dorset The walkway over the weir can be used as a direct link to the Stour Valley Way. This is a long-distance route from Christchurch, where the rivers Stour and Avon converge into the sea. It follows the river for sixty four miles, up to Stourhead, a National Trust Estate which contains the source of the Stour within it's famous gardens. Sturminster Newton in Dorset A walkway over the weir is the main footpath over to the island immediately upstream of Sturminster Mill. Another bridge leads into the meadow beyond. There is also a tractor ford over to the far end of the island at the top of the riverside meadow.
