Hear ye! Hear ye! Smile

Dear friends,

We all know PoE is a child of our very own Chris and Sarah, and we also know they've been working hard at maintaining this website and forum, along with moderators and other contributors (we all know who they are, right?).

It goes without saying there are expenses made other than the work of all the PoErs; there is server storage space that needs to be rent to store all the pictures we upload, for instance, among others.
Although some expenses can be covered by advertising made by other companies on the website, we were thinking it would be of great use if PoE could finance itself, at least partly.

The idea is to have some exclusive PoE items, members and third parties could acquire only through PoE, hence contributing to finance our beloved website. There are many different items that could fit this purpose but one in particular would make an awful lot of sense, if you ask me.

Since PoE is all about sharing beautiful pictures of England, what if we were to print an exclusive 2010 PoE picture calendar with pictures from our contributors? (Either a wall calendar or a desk calendar, or both is still to be determined, and we could have a new edition each year, of course.)

For now what we need is for all of you to give us feedback on these thoughts and ideas so we can determine if the basic conditions can be gathered to make it happen.
What we need to know for now is:
    1) Would you buy it?
    2) Would you be willing to contribute with your pictures?

Any profit made would help finance PoE. (Of course copyrights would be respected and the pictures would be credited to you. Pictures would be submitted by their authors and voted by all, so chosing them would be as a transparent process as possible.)

Your opinions and thoughts count and are valued, so please share them and try and keep this thread on topic.

We will be updating this thread accordingly with the feedback we receive.

Thank you for reading and thank you in advance for your opinions!

You know thinking about this, its a REALLY great idea, i reckon there would be a hell of a lot sold!!  I'm sure this site gets a lot of traffic, and something like a calendar is relatively inexpensive, I think a lot of people would buy one = a helpful bit of money for PoE.

I think it's a great idea, Nela!  I will most certainly buy one (maybe more and give them as gifts to my anglophile friends).

I also think, T-shirts, bumper stickers for cars, decals (which you can put on books, suitcases, etc), key-chains, coffee mugs, writing pens, scarves, tea towels, and jewelry are good ideas.

Hi Jason, Karen and Diana and thank you for your feedback! Smile

Diana, from my experience (yes, I've done this before for a fan club*), it is best to take babysteps, if you know what I mean, and to take care of things individually. We need to have a notion of how many people would buy the items and in what do the items consist of, per si.

Sometimes it is harder than it seems to have everything coordinated and in place for things to go ahead. Wink That's why I'm bringing up this issue several months before there's any real interest in the 2010 calendars.Let's say we want to start selling them in middle November 2009, then we need to have the pictures picked no later than by middle October so we can order a sample and make the appropriate changes, if needed. Then we have to advertise the calendars and wait for people to make a pre-order, so we can finance the investment and this takes time.

I know PoE t-shirts, bumper sticks, decals, key-chains, pens, mugs and so on would sell, but how many people outside the PoE comunity would be willing to buy them? The calendars, in my opinion, should be sold not only to the PoE comunity but also to the public in geral, advertising PoE, of course.

I'm not trying to imply there shouldn't be other items, and I am game to help if needed, needless to say, I think. I just believe we should concentrate first on what distinguishes PoE: the pictures; and then try and diversify our offer.

I'm not sure if this makes sense to you guys... any thoughts?

* we had t-shirts, mugs, key-chains, stickers, pens and CD slipcases made and built up a stock that is hardly payed for, but the calendars were a hit and payed themselves, with a 80% return on investment.

Guys, please comment and don't let this subject drop. If enough people are willing to cooperate we'll be able to get to work from next week on...

It's a great idea Nela, and thank you for taking the initiative. I know Chris and Sarah will very much appreciate what you are trying to do, ultimately to support POE!
