I would say you log in to protect your own posts. So that nobody can post under your name and cause havoc.
We are always welcoming new people to the forum and part of that process is for them to read other posts and get a feel for the community. I think many people have been attracted here by our banter and general good feeling.
The only way I think we can protect our privacy would be to have handles/pseudonyms. Like I would be known here as Awie.
Of course if anyone who is familiar with us comes onto a forum and reads our posts, knowing us personally, they would still be able to figure out who we are. i.e. if my son were to go onto my LOTR forum, I think they would figure out who I was because my posts are very much who I am so they would recognise that.
As for the private forum suggested by Jason, that is good, but think of how many of our little group have been added along the way, that means that there are others out there who will join us that would fit into our group like a hand in a glove. We would be doing a disservice to them and ourselves to block them.
I hope I have not misunderstood your meaning and gone off on a tangent, that would be terribly embarrassing
